What is about the Expo 2015 Milan area ' years later? 2024 updates
The Expo 2015 Milan exhibition site, where the related event took place, is located in the north-west sector of the Lombard capital. Ninety per cent of it is in Milan, and the remaining 10 per cent is in the municipality of Rho.
The area occupied an area of 110 hectares and was adjacent to the Fieramilano exhibition space.
Prior to the Expo 2015 event, the area was occupied by industrial production facilities and then used for agricultural purposes, logistics, and municipal services.
Since the end of the universal exhibition, the site has been redeveloped into the new MIND—Milano Innovation District.
Milano Innovation District (Distretto dell’Innovazione di Milano) or MIND is the name given to the project dedicated to the area where the Expo 2015 event took place in Milan[1]. MIND is part of the new ‘Cascina Merlata-MIND’ district. The area has become of interest to parties such as the Arexpo company, which owns the land, and the Australian Lendlease, which won the concession for 99 years, the University of Milan, which is proposing a campus, the San Donato Group, which has built the new IRCCS Galeazzi-Sant’Ambrogio Hospital, the new 16-storey, 94 m high hospital with vertical development, making it the highest hospital in Europe[2], and the Human Technopole research centre.
Developments
March 2018: the master plan was presented.
March 2019: international competition for the Human Technopole Foundation headquarters starts.
August 2019: the first building site for the new Galeazzi Institute starts.
December 2021: US giant Illumina, Inc. announces to open its Italian headquarters in MIND.
January 2022: Californian business accelerator Berkeley SkyDeck moves into MIND.
March 2022: the first companies to move into MIND are announced: pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, life sciences start-up incubator Bio4Dreams and Rold.
June 2022: AstraZeneca, Bio4Dreams and Rold officially take possession of the space.
September 2022: the new Galeazzi Institute (San Donato Group) is inaugurated.
November 2023: the relocation of ABB Electrification’s headquarters from Vittuone to Mind is announced. The move will materialise in early 2026.

Fast Post Expo 2015: a sustainable project in Arexpo - 2016
One year after Milano Expo 2015, we are here to talk again about it. “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” slogan based on food sustainability, energies and innovation. So, for this year Expo replies with new projects.
This summer 2016, Expo has a new sustainable meaning: a requalification project, well situated between Rho Fiera and Milan.
The Arexpo, public organisation created to lead the transformation and requalification of the ex Expo 2015 area, planned a new governance that started the project for this summer, aiming not to leave the expo area empty and useless for many reasons, but basically its maintenance costs around 12 million of Euros per year.Would wastefulness to leave it!
Across this Expo’s “new launch”, Giuseppe Bonomi, Arexpo S.p.a’s MD, wants to promote a great usable area as an equipped urban park to integrate more credibility in public institutions and mainly to value Expo in its transition phase of the major political election. Yet from the 27th of May, Rho Fiera area greets local community, organizations and various categories of events until the 30 September 2016. For this occasion, Regione Lombardia invested 50 million of Euros, settled by food services and trade centre points in it: sport, art and sustainability are three Arexpo key players. Starting from volleyball to football, from climbing to basket, an open space to athletes and sports people. In this sector maxi-screens for most anticipated events of 2016 such as the UEFA European Championship and the Olympic Games have been installed. Last, but not list… an area of 17.000 square metres is totally devoted to “21st Century. Design after Design” of Triennale and to Planetario vegetable garden for the zero kilometres production and sale point of 150 fruits and vegetables varieties. All that near Children Park and Cardo, a space for playful activities and street food area.
The government, in long term, would create a Human Sciences park, Technopole as the “Città del Sapere” (Knowledge City), coordinated by Genoa’s technological Institute through 150 million of Euros for ten years. Nevertheless, site will include a wider real estate project in proportion to actual Expo. They want to realize the new Milan University pole with medic and bio-medic research center, agencies, university campus, entertainment and sport activities areas. So all college poles of Università degli Studi di Milano will have to transfer in this place. Building sites will get start between 2017 and 2018, but today they haven’t not yet security about possibility of total university transfer and so students number (that should be 16 millions). Only the Cascina Trivulza project (read more about Cascina Triulza: The Civil society has place in Expo 2015: Cascina Triulza Pavilion) is confirmed. Involved in Expo 2015 Civic Society Pavilion, now it goes on to develop social innovation park through the creation of a Human Factory with university, society and research institution collaborations. Meanwhile, this farmstead is involved in most of cultural events, in which there is the participation of citizens and tourists.
For all, we have just to wait next year (2017), when the project guidelines will be ready. For five years, Arexpo, the municipality of Milano, the Regione Lombardia and the Ministry of Economy and Finance are shareholder to not break up Milan Expo positivity. This is a very important opportunity for economy and employment impact.

Sustainable Expo first visit to Expo 2015 - positive
My visit at Expo 2015 in June gave me also some surprise and the desire to discover more what some of the countries are doing:
Austria and its Breath. 62.5 kg of fresh oxygen produced per hour. Main feature of breathe is the air. Inside the miniature of the Austrian wood offer a sensorial experience of a cleaner world. Maybe this is not the most engaging pavilion but the message is clear, simple and understandable. I appreciated also their kitchen corner with recipes from the forest.
Monaco has eleven interactive exhibition stations inside an architecture made of shipping containers. A meeting point, open and green, with Mediterranean plants and a rainwater-collection system. Project by Enrico Pollini. This pavilion is one of the most focused, simple but with important elements to connect sustainability and the geography of Monaco.
Netherlands has a bright and colourful pavilion. It is the only open pavilion at the Expo – without a waiting-line and without a block to enter the premises.
An important component are the so called “rolling kitchens” – which are 9 different food-trucks, entrepreneurs from the Netherlands with each their own and unique product and story.
The overall theme is Share, develop, grow, live. The message is clearly expressed showing how Netherlanders are working together to obtain their objectives:
- Share. Solutions to global challenges require local, national and international collaboration and the sharing of knowledge and natural resources.
- Grow. Feeding 9 billion people in 2050 in a safe and comfortable environment requires growth by way of innovation and investment.
- Live. Mankind’s main objective is to improve our quality of life.

Gabon is in Expo 2015 with a small room hosted in the chocolate cluster area. This is one of the most interesting stand of the cluters area because it is showing at least a side of the country.
Green Gabon or Gabon Vert (in French) pillar is based on developing the “green oil” that Gabon ecosystem provides: 22 million hectares of forest, 1 million hectares of arable agricultural land and over 800 kilometers of coastline. Development projects are must involve sustainability developing natural resources and adhering to national ecological standards. National Parks, forestry, ecotourism and agriculture are all elements of the main paths to implement the Gabon Vert strategy. – See more at: http://www.en.legabon.org/emerging-gabon/green-gabon#sthash.RrdCB0b3.dpuf.
The Gabon vert is included in a wider program to lead the development of the Gabon. The Emerging Gabon consists of three pillars: Green Gabon , Industrial Gabon and Gabon services . These three pillars provide the structure through which the Gabon will achieve their goals , favoring a diversified approach, more about Emerging Gabon (in French).
Biodiversity should have been the core of the activities of Expo 2015, instead when I visited it, it was empty! I found interesting in particular the exhibition on biodiversity that has been developed by the Scientific Committee made up from University of Milan’s Faculty of Agriculture, in collaboration with the faculties of the Universities of Padova and Bologna. I want to go back, visit again this area and see if I can join a guided tour, last time only one of the stand caught my attention, it was a wildlife and forestry organisation where a member of the stuff explained us how they monitor wild animals across Italy, the bear in particular.
EU Pavilion shows a movie for children about how tradition and science can work together. They also have a small exhibition about the topics developed through the movie: science, farm, cooperation and the Nobel Peace Prize. Discover more about The EU Pavilion.
Sustainable Expo first visit to Expo 2015 - negative
I went to Expo 2015 in June. The place is vast, and the visit was interesting, even if I did not feel the message of feeding the planet energy for life appropriately shared in most of the pavilions I visited.
Please consider every Pavilion has the right to choose what to say and how to say it, so I would just expect many more countries in the world to give importance to some of what I consider the basics:
For example, biodiversity and biodiversity conservation, local agriculture and food, how to solve world hunger one person at a time, and what countries are doing to stop it (which projects and programmes are developing, which are just starting, or what is already done).
In general, I found much more attention to fine food and recipes, cooking contests and shows, little free tasting, and many advertisements.
I wouldn’t say I like to judge but in some of the pavilions, such as:
Angola, Slovenia, Russia, US, Israel: I doubted I was at the BIT (or another European Tourism Fair, perhaps in the rural tourism sector corner) instead of at Expo 2015. I was not interested in cueing and visiting the Italian Pavillion because all I heard about it was chefs’ shows, food contests, etc. I will visit it during the evening next time I go to Expo 2015.
Some days ago, I also wondered if Expo 2015 would open and feed the emigrants in Italy waiting to pass to go to North Europe. The idea seemed absurd, but is not the title of Expo 2015 “Feeding the World, Energy for Life“?
Sustainable Food, Slow Food & Expo 2015
The increasing importance of sustainable food comes from a deeper knowledge of the consequences of food choices. Through our food choices we can collectively influence how food is cultivated, produced and distributed, and as a result, bring about great change.
Slow Food is global grassroots organization (founded in Italy by Carlo Petrini) aiming to make all people able to access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet.
Slow Food will be present at Expo 2015 sharing its vision and ongoing projects with the exhibition Discover Biodiversity. At the far east of the Decumano just a few steps from one of the main entrances.
The structures evoke the typical farmhouses of Lombardy’s rural landscape. The three modular buildings built from PEFC-certified larch wood from sustainably managed forests.
When the event ends, the buildings will be taken apart, moved and used elsewhere. This is our response to one of the big questions hanging over the future of the exhibition site. The Slow Food area will not be an encumbrance on the land, and nor will it be wasted.
The destiny of the structures and the installation will be decided during Expo’s six months, with anyone who wants to offer ideas of how to use them invited to do so. The final decision will be announced before September 30, 2015.

FairTrade part of the sustainable side of Expo 2015 - March 2015
I’m happy to share about the sustainable side of Expo 2015 once again. This time, I want to tell you about FairTrade International and Italy.
I am still looking for the standards that make Expo2015 a more “sustainable” fair than others, but I want to share good practices and organizations you can find inside if you decide to visit Expo 2015.
Fairtrade is a global organization with 28 members who work to secure better deals for farmers and workers. It is an alternative approach to conventional trade based on a partnership between producers and consumers.
The internationally agreed Fairtrade Standards are developed through a collaborative process involving farmers and workers, traders and businesses, and other stakeholders. Producer organizations and traders are certified according to these Standards, and when farmers can sell as Fairtrade, it can provide them with improved terms of trade. This allows them to plan for their future and improve their quality of life according to their priorities. Fairtrade offers consumers a powerful way to reduce poverty through everyday shopping with a wide choice of products that carry the FAIRTRADE trademarks.
Currently, there are more than 1.5 million small-scale farmers and workers in Fairtrade-certified producer organizations in 74 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific. Fairtrade-certified products are sold in 125 countries, and the sales of Fairtrade-certified products in 2013 reached €5.5 billion.
When the Italian director Paolo Pastore asked why they are participating in Expo Milano 2015, he said
Fairtrade is an international organization that operates in 78 developing countries and involves 1.5 million farmers who work the land while respecting the environment and biodiversity. Thanks to our standards, these same workers have been able to take control of their lives. In parallel, their products can be purchased on “fair” terms and sold in our markets. Through Expo Milano 2015, we want to show everyone worldwide that there is another way to choose what to buy and to respect the producers and their work.

Oikos's project - best sustainable practices food security - Expo2015
Very happy to share this news about Oiko’s Onlus the noprofit organisation I am collaborating with for a sustainable tourism project on Lake Como, Italy. I discovered that an Oikos’s project on conservation and co-management of the Lampi Marine National Park, in Myanmar, has been selected by Expo Milano 2015 as one of the world 18 Best Sustainable Development Practices on food security.
The project “Participatory Land-Use Management and Ecotourism in Lampi Marine National Park, Myanmar,” funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was recognized as one of the best practices in priority 1, Sustainable management of natural resources. It will be illustrated through a photo story realized by Expo 2015 and shown during the exhibition.
The Best Sustainable Development Practices initiative is part of the “Feeding Knowledge” programme, which aims to gather and spread the best solutions for food security and sustainable development.
Five projects – realized in Mongolia, Niger, Guatemala, Tanzania and Italy – will be shown in a film produced by Expo Milano 2015; the other 13 will be illustrated through photographic stories and then demonstrated in Expo’s Pavilion Zero, the most prominent thematic Pavilion in the Expo’s history, developed in collaboration with the United Nations.

Expo 2015 news: sustainability, innovation and energy are the keywords - 2014
Expo 2015 News about sustainability. The Sustainable side of Expo2015: sustainability and sustainable tourism are not only words.
Less than one year and the Universal Exposition will start in Milan. As usual, some issues need to be solved, but I would like at least tell you the current situation.
A vast number of meetings have been organised, and many more are going to come to Milan and surrounded areas such as Como, Lecco, Erba but not only.
In Italy, Expo fever is started, but while I was looking for information related to the Expo, I found some unexpected data. In essence, there are around 110.000 researches for the keyword ‘expo’ and 60.500 for the ‘expo 2015’ monthly world wide.
This is not exactly what I was expecting to find considering the importance of the event and its theme.
This is the reason why I want to give you some information about the Expo.
All the participants can be discovered here www.expo2015.org/en/participants/countries
There will be pavilions for each state but not only, but the theme is also Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life and agriculture, energy, digital connection and sustainability are the most relevant keywords, the ones are leading all the event.
From the Pinterest official profile, there are updates about the pavilions. The information available is from Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Brasil, Cile, China, Czech Republic, EU, Estonia, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Moldavia, Monaco, Spain, Switzerland, (USA) the United States of America and (UAE) the United Arab Emirates.
The most interesting pavilions related to sustainability are currently: Austria, Israel, Monaco and Switzerland.
Austria is going to present Breath. 62.5 kg of fresh oxygen produced per hour. The main feature of Breath will be air. Inside, a miniature Austrian wood will offer a sensorial experience of a cleaner world—concept and project by Klaus K. Leonhart, the Terrain team. With Breath, Austria is making an incisive contribution to the theme. Breathe highlights the No.1 source of nourishment and one of the essential resources for an international audience: AIR. Architecture, Nature, Culture and Research are brought together to offer the visitor a personal experience.
Israel will bring experience and knowledge about agriculture. Two thousand three hundred seventy square meters, a vertical garden, recycled materials. Project by David Knafo and inspired by the distinctive aspect of Israel’s agricultural production, the pavilion will present the theme “The Field of tomorrow”.
Monaco will have Eleven interactive exhibition stations inside an architecture made of shipping containers. A meeting point, open and green, with Mediterranean plants and a rainwater collection system. Project by Enrico Pollini.
Switzerland will educate the audience through Five towers provided with local products available for everyone, and they are going to encouraged people to reflect on its consumption patterns. It is “Confederation Helvetica”, the Swiss Pavilion designed by Brugg-based Netwerch firm
There will also be food clusters representing cereals and tubers, chocolate, coffee, fruits and legumes, Island (ocean and sea), rice and spices with dedicated pavilions and a couple of pavilions dedicated to specific topics, such as Biodiversity and Pavilion Zero (a scenic exhibition where to discover the millennial relationship between man and nature).
As sustainable tourism expert, I cannot avoid trying to help visitors and residents to find the real, sustainable side of Expo 2015 (food producers, accommodation and services providers that regular channels don’t know or don’t consider, experience to do only with residents and stories to listen to only from local people) because many providers are working hard on this field and nobody seems willing to promote them.

How do we propose you to discover Italy (Not only during Expo 2015)?
– Choosing small accommodation linked to the territory, in which it is possible to talk, get to know the owners and eating local produce: farmhouse, B&B, small residence.
– Tasting the local products that make the Mediterranean diet famous and the Italian way of life worldwide: a day into the field (learning and maybe also trying for a day to help producers during their job) but also wine tasting, meals and food&beverage in general.
– Suggesting the experience to live in the area to know and appreciate it, the target of services to be provided is extensive, so offers more consistent with our mission (sustainability) are selected: sports activities such as hiking in the mountains and cultural events.
– Advising businesses of well-being and relaxation: the Italian way of life is made up of culture, beauty, good food, great wine and wellness.
